A little of this, a little of that....

I have to start out by giving a little shout out to my hubby.
John was up on the Wolf River racing in the Wolfman Triathlon we try to do every year. It's a whitewater paddle/mountain bike/trail running triathlon, and other than giving birth it has been the coolest and most challenging physical feat I have accomplished. I flaked out this year...at nine months postpartum I'm just not back in the shape I wanted to be. I feel slightly disappointed in myself, but it is what it is and feeling down about it isn't going to change anything. We decided we'd race in the tandem category next year, which means we'd get to paddle the river in a canoe rather than each in our own kayaks. I think that would be a lot of fun and I'd feel a lot more confident since navigating the rapids is the most challenging part of the whole race for me.
Anyway, I'm proud of John for his performance -- he finished in the same time as the last time he raced but they added more technical single track to the mountain bike segment this year, so considering that, he actually did better. (Nice work, Honey!)
And now we're home and I am trying to figure out how to manage my time this week. I have officially decided to relaunch my freelance writing career so I'm working on the details of that these days. I'm finding it was so much easier for me to meet writing deadlines when they were imposed on me by an editor or producer. Now that I'm my own boss, I have to overcome my tendencies for procrastination and slackerdom. I find myself sitting down to write, but then turning to facebook or even this blog instead. Don't get me wrong -- I love writing for the blog, but it doesn't exactly bring in a paycheck.
Anyway, I'm going to make a go of it and I'm in the process of creating a professional website. So when that's up and running, I'll link from here so you can check it out. I'm going to have to start it on a free site until I am making enough to justify paying for a real site, but I'm OK with it being a work in progress.
Somehow I feel like announcing here that I'm going to start pouring some energy into writing professionally again will hold me a little more accountable. Please feel free to ask me about it from time to time...hopefully that pressure will keep me submitting essays and pitching article ideas. I'm also going to be expanding into copywriting, so if any of you run businesses or organizations that need someone to write the copy for brochures, handouts, or web pages or even just need someone to edit a newsletter, please be in touch or pass on my name and I can get my resume or portfolio to you.
Also -- to any of you graphic designers out there who have clients needing some text to accompany the lovely graphics you design, I am happy to subcontract as well.
OK, sorry for all the business talk today. Once I get my professional site up and running, I'll keep it all over there.
How about you? Any new projects (hobby or business) that you are embarking on? Honestly -- I want to hear about it! Tell me about it in the comments section.
(side note: for those of you who are followers through google that have been having a hard time commenting, try typing your comment and selecting Name/URL as the option, then enter your name and either enter your website or leave the URL section blank. That should work for you.)

Well, what a coincidence...I, too, have been spending the past week revamping my freelancing career (which was interrupted and subsequently neglected right out of existence by a two-year stint as a graduate student.) I'm sending off my first submission in over two years tomorrow morning. Thanks to your post, I'll also consider redesigning my professional website...so much to consider! Good luck!
Cynthia, good luck to you! I finished grad school right before my second son was born, and I definitely understand the way it can consume most waking moments. ;)
Thanks, Elizabeth....I finished in June and sometimes I feel like I'm getting to know myself all over again! It's particularly true with the writing--I think I managed a whopping 4 or 5 articles during grad school--I feel like I'm starting all over again. Glad for the company, though--I'll be back :)
